TRY THIS: STRESS LESS
There are many signs and symptoms that you may notice when you are experiencing stress and anxiety. These signs commonly fall into three categories: feelings, thoughts and behavior.
Read over the following symptoms and see if these sound like what you have been going through lately:
Feelings
- Feeling anxious
- Feeling edgy
- Feeling scared
- Feeling nervous
- Feeling irritable
- Feeling wound-up
- Feeling moody
- Feeling alarmed
Thoughts
- Low self-esteem
- Fear of failure
- Inability to concentrate
- Worrying about the future
- Embarrassing easily
- Preoccupation with thoughts/tasks
Behavior
- Crying for no apparent reason
- Acting impulsively
- Startling easily
- Grinding your teeth
- Increasing smoking, use of drugs and alcohol
- Being accident-prone
- Losing your appetite or overeating
If you have checked at least one item in each of two categories chances are that you need to relax more. Try this
| 1. |
Relax your standards. (The world will not end if this particular item does not happen today).
|
| 2. |
Say "No!" Saying "no" to extra projects, everyone, everyday, means quiet time to relax and be alone.
|
| 3. |
Simplify: You are only one person, and there are only 24 hours in a day!
|
| 4. |
Check your breathing throughout the day, and before, during, and after high-pressure situations. Relax all your muscles and take several deep, slow breaths.
|
| 5. |
Visualize your experiences the way you would like them to be.
|
| 6. |
Talk about it: Discussing your problems with a trusted friend can help clear your mind of confusion so you can concentrate on problem solving.
|
| 7. |
Focus on understanding rather than on being understood.
|
| 8. |
Become more flexible. Some things are worth not doing perfectly and some issues are fine to compromise upon.
|
| 9. |
Eliminate destructive self-talk: I'm too old, too stupid, etc.
|
| 10. |
Have a forgiving view of events and people. Accept the fact that we live in an imperfect world.
|
| 11. |
Have an optimistic view of the world. Believe that most people are doing the best they can. |
